Experimental Analog Photo Workshop with Maika Elan

9th – 10th May 2015 : 2 Days of experimental film photography with award-winning Vietnamese photographer Maika Elan in Singapore.


This Weekend Workshop is designed for photography enthusiasts and hobbyists who want to explore and experiment with analog photography with film cameras. Conducted over 2 days in Singapore, the workshop will be led by award-winning Vietnamese photographer Maika Elan and facilitated by Kevin WY Lee, founder of IPA. Maika will share her work with analog cameras including lomography, multiple expose techniques, street photography and portraiture.

Workshop Outline:

  • 12pm–6pm, SATURDAY: Workshop orientation and introduction to film photography presentation with techniques and tips including multiple exposure techniques and working with colour and black & white film.
  • 12pm–6pm, SUNDAY: Photo Walk with Maika Elan with practical analog photography on the streets of Singapore.
  • Participants will need to develop their own negatives and submit scanned pictures for review and feedback after Sunday's Photo Walk session. A list of recommended photo processing shops and services in Singapore will be available. 


Workshop Requirements:

  • Basic photography skills - you know how to take pictures.
  • A working 35mm or 120mm film camera for practical photography.
  • Comfortable shoes & a good dose of curiosity.

After studying sociology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, in 2006 Maika began using her first camera, and then Lomo’s family cameras, to take pictures of her daily and private life. She turned to professional photography by starting collaborations for editorial clients and fashion firms in Vietnam. In 2010 Maika moved to documentary photography to produce her first project The Pink Choice, an intimate look inside the personal lives of gay couples in Vietnam. The project has been published in many magazines on print and online in countries including USA, UK, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain, China, India and Brazil. Maika Elan was double-awarded for the “best photo essay” and the “best single photo” in 2010 at Indochina Media Memorial Foundation and in 2012 The Pink Choice was finalist at Asian Women Photographers.

Her first solo exhibition was hosted at Goethe Institut in Hanoi in 2012. The Pink Choice won 1st prize stories, Contemporary Issues, at World Press Photo 2013 and 1st prize documentary story at Pride Photo Award 2013. Maika also participant in the 2013 Joop Swart Masterclass.

Maika Elan is also a photographer in the VII Photo Agency Mentor Program.

Kevin WY Lee is a photographer and creative director based in Asia. Kevin has worked as a creative professional in Australia and Singapore for over 15 years. In 2010, he founded Invisible Photographer Asia (IPA), under which he has produced the annual Invisible Photographer Asia Awards and the IPA Photo Books Show, Singapore’s first Photo Book Festival.

Kevin is also a nominator for the prestigious Prix Pictet Award and the Colorful Guizhou China International Photographic Exhibition. He has also served as a jury for the Singapore Creative Circle Awards, The Big Picture Contest, Angkor Photo Workshop, and Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards.
